The Sun newspaper has reported a 'storm' over an interview in Doctor Who magazine with gay actor John Barrowman. In the January issue of the publication, Barrowman who has played bisexual Captain Jack Harkness in the series and the spin-off Torchwood discussed the apparent fact that his dick is really too big.
He also discusses Torchwood director Ashley Way, saying: Hes a real hotty. I like him. He has a nice bum.
Barrowman also confesses that he fancied former Doctor, Christopher Ecclestone and how he also finds David Tennant 'sexy'.
This month's issue of Doctor Who magazine features an unhappy letter from a Robert Mitchell in Brighton. The fan identifies himself as gay In the first line, and admits to being 'delighted that at long last sexual minorities are being positively represented, not only in adult sci-fi drama such as Torchwood but also in a family series like Doctor Who'.
Mr Mitchell goes on to express his concern at the 'overt sexual comments' in the Barrowman interview. 'As an adult I can understand and accept that John is an outgoing, confident gay man, who uses sexual innuendo to be humorous. However your magazine is read not only by adults, but also by many children and young people'.
He finishes his missive of complaint by pointing out that the publication is called 'Doctor Who magazine and not Gay Times, which I also purchase'.
Oddly enough, The Sun neglected to mention that the author of the letter was gay. Perhaps this wouldn't tally with their continuing depiction of gays as lewd, rude and sex obsessed.
Publishing the fact that a gay man has complained about mild sauciness due to concern for the delicate minds of British children could potentially influence Sun readers into thinking gay men might be ethical, balanced and responsible. Heaven forbid. Such reporting might even lead people to think that lesbians and gays can be trusted with children, perhaps even adopt them.
The Sun did report on the fact that DWM editor Clayton Hickman apologised 'for any offence' caused by the content of Barrowman's interview.
Editor Clayton Hickman is mildly amused by the story and told GAY.com, 'It must have been a slow news day'. In Hickman's statement, he also points out that he considers DWM a magazine for older readers (there's a sister publication aimed at children).
The Sun chose to ignore this fact saying, Doctor Who bosses have apologised after gay star John Barrowman made a series of saucy remarks in the shows family magazine.
John Barrowman was voted Stonewall's entertainer of the year in 2006. Last month OK! magazine published photos of his civil ceremony to his partner, British architect Scott Gill.
